Sam Koliopoulos, a long time resident of Jersey City, passed away after a brief illness on July 29, 2025. Sam was born in the village of Sanga (Tripolis), Greece on August 10, 1936. He immigrated to the United States as a teenager and started working in the restaurant business to help support his family abroad. He later returned to Greece and married his wife of 59 years, Konstantina (Dina) Mavrogiannis. Sam and Dina eventually returned to the United States and settled in Jersey City where they raised their two daughters Demetria and Nina. Later in life Sam and Dina moved to Scotch Plains to live closer to their daughters and grandchildren.
Sam worked tirelessly in the restaurant business his whole career to provide a good life for his family. He always greeted his patrons with a smile and a joke and was loved by all. Sam was a quiet man who did not like to be the center of attention. He enjoyed the simple things in life, walks in the park, watching game shows in his favorite chair and being the expert "meat carver" at family gatherings. He was content being surrounded by his family and spending time with his grandchildren.
Sam was predeceased by his parents, Apostolos and Konstantina Koliopoulos, brother Vasilios, sister Georgia Tsiampas and his son in law John Petris. He is survived by his loving wife Dina, daughter Demetria Petris, daughter and son in law Nina and Charles Anastasiou, grandchildren Michael and Samantha Anastasiou, John and Sam Petris and his sister Athanasia Tatakis. Sam will be dearly missed by ALL of his surviving family members. His kindness and generosity will never be forgotten
