Robert (Robin) Mathews Bowman, 83, of Fanwood, New Jersey, passed away on January 7, 2024, after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease.
Robin was born on July 18, 1940, to James and Caroline Bowman (nee Matthews) in Bangor, Ireland. From an early age he showed interest and talent in the sciences. He obtained his undergraduate degree and PhD in Chemistry from Queens University, Belfast, Ireland. He then completed his post doctorate studies at the University of Minnesota.
Upon obtaining his PhD, Robin began his 27-year career with Ciba Geigy. During that time, he was the lead chemist in developing the compound Letrozole, which is instrumental in the treatment of breast cancer. His discovery aided millions of women. Robin went on to become a key member of the Ciba Geigy research management team.
While studying at the University of Minnesota, Robin met his wife Dorothy, they recently celebrated 56 years of marriage. Robin and Dorothy were long time residents of Summit, New Jersey where they raised two sons, Craig and Grant. In retirement they moved to Bella Vista, Arkansas where they enjoyed spending time with family and friends, all were welcome at their lake house. Robin also enjoyed many days on the golf course. Golf was his favorite past time. Before moving to Arkansas, he was a long-time member of the Mendham Golf & Tennis Club. One of his proudest golf moments was during a trip to Pinehurst, North Carolina where he scored a hole in one at the Country Club of North Carolina.
Robin is predeceased by his parents, James and Caroline and his sister, Gillian. He is survived by his sons Craig (Annemarie) and Grant (Anya), his beloved grandchildren, Rachel, Anna, Katya and Alek and his many nieces and nephews. He will always be remembered by his family as a kind, gentle and wise Irishman.
Services will be held at Higgins and Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home, 582 Springfield Ave., Westfield NJ on Friday, January 12th, viewing is at 10am with services to immediately follow at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Parkinson's Foundation to continue Robin’s battle against this disease.
