Robert Charles Gansler

Robert C. Gansler of Springfield, New Jersey passed away at Overlook Medical Center on September 7, 2020 at the age of 90.

Born on August 25,1930 to Charles and Martha Gansler, Robert was raised in Newark, NJ where he attended and graduated from West Side High School. Robert served with the United States Marines and was a combat veteran of the Korean War where he received multiple citations for service including the Purple Heart. Robert was married to Doris Gansler (German) for 36 years until 1997 when she passed.

Robert was a professional photographer and proprietor of Robert’s Studio of Photography in Union and Springfield, NJ, until his retirement. After retiring, Robert was active in the local community, serving for more than 20 years as a volunteer EMT and later Historian for the Springfield First Aid Squad. He was also a volunteer at Overlook Medical Center for more than 22 years, and continued to volunteer his time there until volunteer service was limited due to Covid-19 concerns.

Robert was predeceased by his wife Doris and daughter Melanie Demarest. He is survived by his daughter Jodi Meissner and son-in-law Jeffrey Meissner of Hillsborough, NJ; son Andrew Gansler and daughter-in-law Christine Mancini of Hoboken, NJ; son-in-law Scott Demarest of The Villages, FL; grandchildren Nicole and Devon Meissner, Luca Gansler, and Steven and Sarah Demarest; sister Judy Lieb and brother-in-law Sanford Lieb of Boynton Beach, FL; sister-in-law Ann German of Bal Harbour, FL.

A small service will be held on Wednesday, September 9th at 1:00 PM at the Higgins and Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home, 582 Springfield Ave., Westfield NJ, followed immediately by interment at Beth Israel Cemetery in Woodbridge, NJ. 

Due to Covid-19 concerns, the service will also be broadcast via Zoom to all friends and family that would like to attend virtually, using the link and instructions below.

Shiva will be held outdoors at Jodi Meissner’s residence at 43 Burniston Court, Hillsborough, NJ on Thursday, September 10th from 3:00 pm to 8:00pm. Friends and family are encouraged to visit only if they are comfortable doing so, and should prioritize their own health and safety first and foremost.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family asks that any offering be made to the Humane Society of the US or the Somerset Regional Animal Shelter.
