Richard Toy passed away on Friday, July 24, 2020. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday July 28, 2020 at 10:30AM at Holy Spirit R. C. Church in Union. Visitation will be held prior to the mass from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM at Higgins and Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home, 582 Springfield Ave., Westfield. He was born and raised in Elizabeth, a graduate of St. Genevieve’s School and Thomas Jefferson High School. He was an altar server for St. Genevieve’s church and a local talent, pitching for the Elmora Youth League. After active and reserve duty in the U.S. Coast Guard, he obtained his degree from the College of Steubenville, now the Franciscan University, in Ohio. While there, he lent his considerable talents to their baseball team, thrilling the crowd with his pitching prowess. Returning home, he married Mary, a teacher, also from Elizabeth. They made their home in Union. He was a dedicated family man- a loyal, generous husband and a father to four children. Richard’s busy and fulfilling career included social work for the Union County Welfare Board as well as administration for Children’s Specialized Hospital. He was involved in his community through the Putnam Manor Civic Association, in the Church as a eucharistic minister, as a Knight of Columbus, a good neighbor and a helping friend to sick animals. Losing or winning, he never missed a Yankee or Notre Dame game. Richard is survived by his wife of 53 years, four children and three grandchildren.
