Peter Battaglia died peacefully on August 4, 2024. He was born on January 31, 1936 to Pietro and Tomassa in Mezzojuso, Sicily. He came to America in 1964 and married the love of his life, Rose, in 1967. He lived in Garfield for several years until they moved to Lodi, NJ for most of his life. Two years ago, he moved to Springfield, New Jersey, near his children and grandchildren, whom he adored.
Peter was a mason in Mezzojuso and he was known as Mastro Pietro in Sicily. When he came to America, he worked with his brother-in-law, Sal, and his brother Frank as a mason. He later joined the Union in NYC through his brother-in-law, Dominic, as a spacker, and later, as a plasterer. He also worked weekends and nights, and if he wasn’t on a job, he would work on the homes of friends and family out of the goodness of his heart.
In 1982 he became a US citizen, and it was one of the greatest days of his life. Although he was so proud of his Italian heritage, he was happy to be a citizen in the greatest country in the world.
He will be remembered as the selfless man he was, only cared about family, food, and feeding everyone, including neighbors! He loved the Mets, gardening, and going to church.
He is survived by the love of his life, Rose, and his two daughters, Marisa Pica and Lorena Barbosa. As well as, Lorena’s husband David, and Peter’s five grandchildren: Julianna Pica, Jessica Pica, Jenna Pica, Giada Barbosa, and Milania Barbosa. He is also survived by his sisters, Santina DiPalermo, Franca Lagattuta, Sister Victoria, many nieces, nephews, and wonderful friends, who all adored him.
