Oscar Luis Cortizo was born in Güines, Cuba, on December 18, 1933, to Luis and Maria Cortizo, where he spent his early years surrounded by his family and vibrant culture. From an early age, he displayed a natural curiosity and a deep appreciation for the arts and sports, specifically music, poetry, and baseball. These passions would stay with him throughout his lifetime, continually enriching his diverse experiences. As a singer, his voice carried melodies that touched hearts, while his deep appreciation for the written word led him to express his innermost thoughts and emotions through the art of poetry. Additionally, his love for baseball drove him to excel as both a catcher and a pitcher, showcasing his skills and dedication on the field. Whether through music, poetry, or sports, Oscar's multifaceted talents enriched the lives of those around him.
Driven by his dreams, Oscar Luis Cortizo ventured beyond the shores of Cuba, seeking new opportunities in a foreign land. With unwavering determination, he made the courageous decision to immigrate to the United States, establishing himself as a hardworking and devoted individual. However, his unwavering commitment to family extended far beyond his own ambitions. Recognizing the significance of their presence, Oscar selflessly facilitated the immigration of his mother, Maria Perez-Cortizo, father, Luis Oscar Cortizo, sister, Ovies Cortizo, and other cherished family members, ensuring they could share in the promise of a better future. These tireless efforts exemplified the profound love and care he held for those closest to his heart, revealing a selflessness that became a defining pillar of his character.
Oscar Luis Cortizo's journey in the United States led him to serve in the Army, stationed in Germany, where fate brought him the love of his life, Elfriede Ecker-Cortizo. For an incredible 64 years, they shared a profound bond as husband and wife. They were blessed with three children: Oscar Luis Cortizo, Alex Cortizo, and Ovies Maria Cortizo-Guadalupe. Together, Oscar and Elfriede faced life's trials and triumphs, united by unwavering love and an unbreakable bond.
Beyond the trials and tribulations, Oscar Luis Cortizo possessed a contagious zest for life. He approached every challenge with unwavering determination, serving as a shining example of perseverance to all who knew him. His warm personality, wisdom, infectious laughter, enlightening conversations, and genuine kindness touched the lives of countless individuals. From his diverse range of life experiences as a factory worker, tapestry artist, business owner, real estate agent, avid Yankee fan, and fisherman, he acquired a wealth of knowledge that he eagerly shared with others. Oscar's cleverness and wisdom were evident in his enlightening conversations, reflecting a life fully lived and enriched by his unique pursuits.

Oscar is survived by his wife, Elfriede Cortizo, and his sons, Oscar Luis Cortizo and Alex Cortizo. Daughter Ovies Maria Cortizo-Guadalupe. Daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Soledad Cortizo-Brand, and son-in-law Cesar Ulpiano Guadalupe. Grandchildren Erika Janine Cortizo-McMenamin, Kristian Alexander Cortizo, Oscar Luis Cortizo, Adrien Alexis Cortizo, Sebastian Luis Guadalupe, Amanda Nicole Guadalupe. Great grandchildren, Alexander Kai Cortizo and Valentina Firenze Cortizo.
