Michael J. Murnane, 89, of Union, formally of Elizabeth, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, April 22, 2023, in Westfield, NJ surrounded by his family.
Michael was born on May 25, 1933, in Limerick, Ireland to Michael and Brigid Murnane. As a young man, he played Rugby and was a member and oarsman of the Athlunkard Boat Club. Each weekend, you could still catch him watching a game or two and rooting for his hometown.
Michael immigrated to America in 1956. He was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and an owner of Shannon Imports in Elizabeth. Michael worked in construction until a near-fatal accident while constructing the World Trade Building Number 7 sent him on a different path. Instead of working, he had the opportunity to live with his daughter, Bridget, and help raise his three grandchildren, Robert, Megan and Lauren. Whether it was going to the park to play on the swings, or picking them up from school, he always enjoyed spending time with “the children”. His face would light up when they came home from college. He loved spending time with them on various adventures including many breakfasts at the Kenilworth Diner.
Michael had an amazing circle of friends, and would often meet them for a drink, a walk around the park, or at the track. In his later years, he could be found at the kitchen table reading the paper and telling stories. If you joined him for some libations, you would be regaled with tales from his youth. He was quite the storyteller and would love to chat it up with friends and family. He was very charismatic, and always seemed to win people over easily. He was kind to a fault and would warm your heart with his smile.
Michael is survived by his daughter, Bridget, his three grandchildren, Robert, Megan and Lauren, his grand puppy Theo (Tiger), Robert (Bob) Sloane Sr., Chris Scaturo, countless friends and extended family. He is predeceased by his parents, Michael and Brigid, his brother John “Louie” Murnane, and his wife Ruth (née Keating). Michael and Ruth will be celebrating their 55th wedding anniversary together on April 27th.
We love you and miss you Dad, Granddad, “Mr. M”, Mike. Rest in peace.
