Maureen Burke

Maureen Patricia Burke, 87, of Rahway, NJ, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on Sunday, April 23, 2023.

Maureen was born February 1, 1936, in Elizabeth, NJ, to the late John J. and Florence J. Nolan of Linden, NJ. She grew up in Linden and graduated as valedictorian from St. Mary of the Assumption High School in 1953.

Maureen was married to Owen Daniel Burke, her loving husband of 34 years who preceded her in death.

A long-time manager at Verizon in environmental services, she was most recently employed at Rosedale Cemetery in Linden.

Maureen was predeceased by her parents and her brothers, Robert J. Nolan and John J. Nolan, Jr.

Maureen is survived by her beloved children, Maureen Patricia Weatherall, EdD and her husband, James Martin and Colleen Marie Hayes and her husband, Glenn David. She took great pride and joy in her grandchildren, James Owen Weatherall, PhD and his wife, Cailin Marie O’Connor, PhD; Kathleen Marie Weatherall, VMD; Glenn David Hayes and his wife, Jennifer Marie, PhD; and Owen Francis Hayes. She was a devoted great-grandmother to Evenstar Marie, Vera Maureen, and James Dennis Weatherall; and to Kieran Glenn Hayes.

Maureen is also survived by her beloved sister, Roberta Canavan, and sisters-in-law, Marguerite Haggerty and Barbara Schuler, as well as many cherished nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be at Higgins and Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home, 582 Springfield Ave., Westfield, NJ 07090 on Thursday April 27th, from 4 to 8 PM.  

Funeral will be held Friday, April 28th at 9:00 AM at Higgins and Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home, followed by Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM at St. John the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Linden, NJ, followed by burial at St. Gertrude Cemetery in Colonia, NJ.
