Matthew M. Benavitch
April 24, 1943 – September 14, 2020 (age 77)
It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend, Matthew M. Benavitch at the age of 77.
Matt passed peacefully on Monday September 14, 2020 in Scotch Plains, NJ and is survived by his loving wife of 51 years Sandy; his son Michael, his daughter Kristen and his granddaughter McKenzie.
A lifelong resident of Elizabeth, NJ Matt’s life was centered in service – at the age of 18 he enlisted in the Marine Corps and was stationed overseas during the start of the Vietnam War. Serving his country and being a Marine was a passion for Matt and an honor he carried throughout his lifetime.
Upon returning home from the Marines, Matt began he is career as an Elizabeth NJ Police Officer. In his over 30 years of service to the police department he rose to Captain and loved nothing more than being with the people of Elizabeth.
Matt was also a dedicated member of the recovery & addiction community where he spent over 30 years committing his service. His devotion to the community and passion to help others was immeasurable – the countless lives he touched through his service will be forever remembered.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation, Friday September 18, 2020 from 4:00PM-8:00PM at Higgins and Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home, 582 Springfield Ave. Westfield. Funeral to take place Saturday September 19, 2020 10:00AM at Higgins and Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home with interment and prayer service to follow at Fairview Cemetery, Westfield.
