Louis Grote, Sr.

Louis Grote Sr. of Smithville, NJ passed away on December 28, 2020 at the age of 88.  Born in Elizabeth, Lou moved to Westfield with his wife Catherine (Seery) where they raised their family.  Lou graduated from St. Benedicts Preparatory HS in Newark. He served in the US Army and was stationed in Alaska. He continued his service for four more years in the Reserves.  Lou was a sheet metal worker by trade and worked for Paul Miller Sheet Metal for 40 years. He was also a proud lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus in Elizabeth NJ.  

Lou, often called “Sweet Lou”, an avid Jets fan, enjoyed bowling on Friday nights, camping on weekends and a cold beer! 

Lou was predeceased by his wife Catherine. They were married for 62 years at the time of her passing in 2018.  Lou is survived by his children, Louis Grote Jr., Leah Lojo (Chris) and Suzanne Bechtle (Louie) and his grandchildren, Caitlin, Brianne, Haley, Corey, Paige and great granddaughter Autumn.  

 Visitation to be held at Higgins and Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home in Westfield, NJ, on Thursday, December 31st from 9:00am - 10:30am. A funeral mass will be held at 11:00am at Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains, NJ.  Internment to follow funeral mass at St, Gertrude Cemetery.
