Lorene “Lori” Szelag, beloved mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2026 at the age of 71, surrounded by love.
Born on December 24, 1954, in Rahway, NJ, Lori lived a life defined by devotion and an unwavering commitment to family. From an early age, she showed a natural ability tocare for others, a trait that would remain at the core of who she was throughout her life.
Lori dedicated much of herself to those she loved, always putting the needs of family and friends before her own. She was especially proud of and devoted to her friends and family. Lori lovingly cared for her Aunt Margie and her late mother, Joan, in their final years of life, offering not only support but genuine companionship and unwavering presence. Caring for others was never a burden to her—it was an extension of her generous heart. Lori had a sharp wit and a wonderfully wicked sense of humor, delivering perfectly timed quips that left those around her laughing, or as Lori would say, “rolling”. Her warmth, kindness, and generosity made people feel instantly welcome and valued.
Lori is survived by her devoted spouse, Mark Stefanelli, with whom she shared a loving partnership for over 30 years; her children, Kevin (Meghan), Nicole, and Chris; and her cherished granddaughter, Emily Charlotte, who brought her immeasurable joy. She was preceded in death by her mother, Joan Worman, her father, Martin Flaherty, her brothers, Kevin and Tommy, and her beloved Aunt “Margie” Carlin. All of whom she held close in her heart. Family and friends truly meant everything to Lori. She treasured time spent together, whether through everyday moments or special traditions. Outside of family life, she found peace in daily yoga, joy in baking for those she loved -including her annual Christmas cookie trays that she gifted to friends and family. She also loved going to Broadway shows. Lori had a deep love for travel, especially her experiences attending yoga retreats throughout Europe, where she found both adventure and tranquility.
Those who knew Lori will remember her for her generosity, support without hesitation, and to bring lightness even during difficult moments. Her legacy is one of love freely given, laughter generously shared, and relationships deeply cherished.
Lori’s love, humor, and spirit will continue to live on through her family and all those whose lives she touched.
Family and friends are invited to attend a wake on Monday, February 2, 2026, between the hours of 3pm-7pm at Higgins and Bonner Funeral Home, 582 Springfield Avenue, Westfield, NJ 07090. Cremation will follow.
