In Loving Memory of Lenore “Libby” Copland Kops
Dec 17, 1930-May 22, 2025
Lenore, affectionately known as “Libby”, died peacefully in her sleep in Mountainside, NJ. She lived an amazing 94 and a half years-living every year on her own terms. Born in the Bronx, New York to Belle and Bill Copland, Libby spent 56 years in Bethpage Long Island before moving to Westfield, NJ, where she spent her final 12 years.
A Trailblazer in Education Libby devoted 44 years to guiding and uplifting others as a Guidance Counselor. At a time when career options for women were limited, she chose a path where she could make a real difference—helping students and families realize dreams that once seemed out of reach. Libby’s proudest moments were seeing her students break barriers, whether it was being the first in their family to attend college or gaining admission to the Ivy League schools.
She graduated from Hunter College in 1952 and, as a true pioneer, was among the first women to earn a master’s degree from Columbia University’s Teachers College in 1954. As Head of Guidance at East Meadow High School, she became a mentor and advocate, always looking out for the underdog. She also completed her School District Administrator (SDA) certification and achieved a Masters + 60 credits.
A Loving Mother and Community Leader
Raising three children-Roy, Kevin and Lisa-as a single Mom in the 1960s and 70s was a challenge. Libby created a loving, stable home while also building a successful career as Head of Guidance at East Meadow High School (NY). She instilled strong family values, leaving an indelible mark of unconditional love and sacrifice. Her love transcended the disappointments, tragedies and hardships she encountered, converting them to positive life lessons. Her professional legacy includes serving as President of the Nassau County Counselors’ Association, being named “Counselor of the Year,” volunteering on numerous Education Boards and countless non-profit associations. She balanced a career and raised 3 children long before “overscheduling” was even a word. She even co-authored a book about Latchkey Children.
A Life Well-Lived
Whenever Libby entered a room, it glowed with her energy and contagious enthusiasm. She had an insatiable zest for traveling. She loved to recount her exciting adventure travels across six continents, 40+ countries, scanning the globe from California to Kashmir. She always laughed and savored the moment whether she was encountering recalcitrant Swiss mountain cows, or failing to properly apply the mask while snorkeling in the Red Sea. Libby could hobnob with the tigers in the African Safari, wine taste in Napa Valley or Argentina, sample champagne in France and still manage to be reprimanded by the Swiss Mother Superior for illegally parking in their convent! She even succeeding in almost fooling the French sisters who ran the BNB in Arles into believing she spoke fluent French after a 5-day visit by only nodding her head and saying “oui” Whether in Paris, Berlin, Morocco, Greece, Israel, Argentina or Brazil— her stories could have rivaled those of Lucille Ball.
Family and Remembrance
Libby is survived by her children, Lisa (Robert) Wendel, Roy (Martha) Kops and five grandchildren, Remy, Devin, Alex, Samantha and Brandon. She was predeceased by her son, Kevin and brother, Richard.
A funeral is planned for Sunday, May 25th 1PM at Cedar Park Cemetery, 735 Forest Ave, Paramus NJ. A Celebration of her Life will be scheduled for June. Details to follow.
