Jose Alcibiades “Cheo” Leon
June 3, 1935 – April 7, 2022
Jose Alcibiades “Cheo” Leon, 86 passed away peacefully surrounded by family, on Thursday, April 7, 2022. Jose fled Bayamo, Cuba in 1968 with his family, to give his family a better life, and went to Spain for three years before coming to Elizabeth, NJ in August, 1971. Since coming to the United States, he spent the rest of his life in Elizabeth, a city that he loved.
Jose is survived by his loving wife Olga (Hajje) Leon of 61 years, his daughter Lourdes, son Jose and daughter-in-law Patti. He is also survived by his grandsons, Christopher and Nicholas, whom he adored and was a doting, loving Abuelo. His love of family was strong and he instilled his love of baseball with the family. The NY Yankees was his favorite team to watch, and scream, and be overjoyed, but not since the 2009 World Series. He was a Manager for the Elizabeth Cubanitos baseball team for many years, and the family over the years always heard wonderful stories about Cheo, from previous baseball players.
Jose was a Sales Manager his entire career starting at Campbell’s Soup Latin Division and ended his career at Malta India in 2012.
Friends and family are invited to his viewing on Sunday, at Higgins and Bonner, Westfield, NJ on Sunday, 4/10 from 4:00-8:00 pm and a Funeral Mass at 10:00 am on Monday, 4/11 at St. Catherine of the Siena, Hillside, NJ. Burial will immediately follow at St. Gertrude Cemetery in Colonia, NJ.
