Mountainside resident John Camara passed unexpectedly Saturday morning August 24th at Overlook Hospital. He was eighty-seven years old. Mr. Camara is survived by his loving wife of sixty-four years, Elaine, two daughters: Dr. Donna Camara (Antonucci) of Mountainside and Sheila Camara of Colorado, son-in-law Joseph Antonucci and grandson “Joey” Antonucci of whom he was immensely proud. The Camara’s have been residents of Mountainside, N.J. for 57 years.
Born in Newark, John enlisted in the Army Air Corps, where he served as a Staff Sergeant. After being stationed in Japan for four years, Mr. Camara returned to the states. He worked for Flying Tigers, Allegheny Airlines and U.S. Airways in Newark N.J. John retired after 35 years of service as the Lead Mechanic at U.S. Airways.
An extraordinarily compassionate and generous man, he was always available to help out family, friends, and neighbors. He touted his specialty as problem-solving and fixing the unfixable! He was passionate about politics and followed local and national political campaigns. He enjoyed working around his home right up to his last day.
To those that knew him, he was ready to perk a pot of coffee and converse around the kitchen table. John is remembered for his mechanical ability, generosity, handsome grin, and love of conversation. He lived a meaningful life. Many will deeply miss him.
