John P. Byrne was born in Elizabeth, NJ to Helen (Flannery) and Vincent Byrne. Before moving to Cranford, where he resided for over 60 years. He proudly served his country in the US Navy. He was a Parishioner of St. Michael’s Church and a long-term Member of the Knights of Columbus.
He was known as Jack, and was a Member of the Teamsters Union Local 701, and drove for trucking companies, such as IML Freight and St. Johnsbury up until 1986, when he began a new career in Painting/wallpapering. He began his own company, Painting Plus in 1987, and continued until he retired in 2016. The next chapter of his life led him to Overlook Medical Center in Summit, as a Concierge. He was happiest when he was working with, and helping people, be it Patients or Co-workers. His co-workers became his 2nd family, and truly enjoyed and loved each one of them. He was always smiling and ready to share a joke or a tip or two on the horses!
Jack, was a diehard Boston Red Sox Fan and would love to banter with NY baseball fans. His love for MLB led him to strive to make it to every Baseball Field. It was a yearly trip with the “Boys” of the family, and he didn’t disappoint with some unforgettable memories. He loved the sport of horseracing, and spent much time at Monmouth Park and Favorites!! In true Irish fashion, always with his cap on, he hosted an Annual St. Paddy’s Day Celebration for all. And we can’t forget the many nights playing cards, until he beat us all! He loved to start the Summers off attending the Memorial Day Parade in town. We all knew where to find him, and looked forward to a hotdog afterwards, even at 10:00 in the morning.
He would “light up” when he spoke of his Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren: Michael, Erin, and Patrick, Laura, Leann and John, DJ and Kaitlin, Jack, Maddy and Brian, Keira, Stella, Michael, and Joanie, Violet, Finn, and Sean, Georgie, Wesley, and John and Betty.
Jack was predeceased by his beloved wife Joan (Hill) Byrne; his Son, John Byrne, Jr., brothers Thomas Byrne and Daniel Byrne, and his Sister, Mary (Byrne)Griffith. He is survived by his devoted children, Eileen, Kathleen, Nancy, Michael and his Wife, Lisa, Kelly Byrne, and Daughter-In-Law, Susan (DelRusso) Byrne, his Loving Sister, Frances Byrne, and many nieces and nephews.
