Joan Rae MacDonald (Barner) passed away peacefully on Friday, March 6, 2026. In her final months, she resided at Brighton Gardens Assisted Living in Mountainside. She was born on February 26, 1933, in Elizabeth, New Jersey and was a proud graduate of Battin High School in Elizabeth, Class of 1950. Following graduation continued her education at Berkeley School of Business.
On May 5, 1956, Joan married the love of her life, Donald J. MacDonald, affectionately known as "Mac." Together they built a life centered around family and friends. This coming May would have marked their 70th wedding anniversary - a testament to the wonderful partnership they shared.
After raising her children, Joan worked for several years at Doris Amster's in Colonia, where she enjoyed meeting people and forming lasting friendships before eventually retiring.
Outside of work, Joan enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. She loved playing word games, going shopping, and spending time with those she loved most. Her kindness, humor, and genuine interest in others made her a friend to everyone she met.
Joan was predeceased by her parents, Margaret Rider Barner in 1977 and Frederick C. Barner in 1996, and her sister, Shirley A. Barner earlier this year. She is survived by her beloved husband, Donald J. MacDonald; her brother, Jeffrey Barner (Rebecca); and her five children: Donald MacDonald Jr. (Patricia), Thomas MacDonald (Debra), Tracie Holmes (Thomas), David MacDonald (Debra), and Patrick MacDonald. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who will forever carry her love and legacy in their hearts.
Joan was truly a woman ahead of her time. Strong, generous, and compassionate, she was the heart and matriarch of her family. She had a natural gift for humor and could make people laugh without even trying. Her warm spirit made her a joy to be around, and she had a remarkable way of making everyone feel welcome and valued.
Family meant everything to Joan. She was endlessly proud of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, celebrating their accomplishments and supporting them in every stage of life. Her generosity, encouragement, and constant presence created a foundation of love that will continue through generations.
Joan's life was defined by love, laughter and unwavering devotion to her family. She leaves behind a legacy of strength, warmth, and humor that will continue to guide those who knew and loved her.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers at Brighton Gardens Assisted Living for their kindness and compassionate care during Joan's time there.
A private celebration of life in Joan's honor will be held at a later date.
