Esther Rose Heitner Obituary

Esther Rose Heitner, age 82, passed away peacefully on June 27, 2026. Esther always considered herself a lifelong New Yorker who spent the last nine months of her life making new friends at Sunrise Assisted Living in Westfield, NJ.

Esther was born in Jersey City but brought up in Brooklyn. She graduated from Brooklyn College and then received her Master of Social Work from Fordham University. After working at the Floating Hospital in New York, she spent most of her career, until her retirement, as a social worker for the VA hospital in New York City – a calling that she loved and where she was truly valued by those who she so caringly counseled. Better yet, the VA Medical Center was just a few short blocks from her long term home on E. 25th St. in Manhattan.

Esther loved dogs – even sometimes more than people! She was extremely talented with her hands, particularly in crafting original and beautiful Jewelry. She had a uniquely quirky sense of humor which made spending time with her fun and always interesting. She adored her niece, Sarah, and nephew, Max, who could do no wrong in her eyes. Esther is survived by her brother Saul (Laurie) of Westfield, NJ, niece Sarah (Dan) of Merrick, NY, nephew Max (Alex) of Ithaca, NY and grand nieces Marigold, Maya, Ellie, and Tessa.
