Dr. Udaykumar Champaklal Mehta of Westfield, New Jersey passed away on Monday, June 6, 2022, at the age of 76 years at home surrounded by family.
Uday was born in a village named Chikhli in Gujarat, India and later moved to Fiji Islands. He returned back to Mumbai, India to attend Grand Medical College where he met his wife Kumudini “Kumi” Sonpal.
He graduated GMC and married the love of his life immediately after in Fiji Islands in 1972. After a short honeymoon, he moved to New Zealand, where his first daughter, Meenal was born. Three years later, the little family moved to England and became a large one, as twins Rohin and Renu were born. The Mehta family finally settled in the United States in 1978. Uday did his final residency training in Overlook Hospital in Summit, New Jersey. Once his residency was completed, he transferred to Atlantic City Children’s Seashore House and became the medical director. His next move was his final stop at Children’s Specialized Hospital, where he spent over 35 years as a Neuro Developmental Pediatrician working with a wide array of patients. He was a pioneer in his field, full of compassion, kindness, and love. His gentle way with patients, families and colleagues was his unique super power.
He enjoyed traveling around the world with his family, but the most special places in his heart were St. Maarten and his Pocono home. Uday loved playing golf, listening to music, playing with his grandchildren, and reveling in the quiet. He was a gregarious man who did so much for so many. He touched the souls of his loved ones. He was the patriarch of our family.
Uday was known for his genuineness, benevolence, and humility. His presence alone touched people’s hearts. One interaction with him left you feeling special and heard. His uncanny ability to shed wisdom was a gift which was cherished by all.
His loss is tremendous for all who knew him.
