Donald Dimitry Obituary

Donald Lee Dimitry, 89, passed away peacefully on Wednesday October 4th, 2023 surrounded by his loving family and his long-time caregiver Abena Fosuae.

Don was a quiet, caring, humble, and selfless man with a quick wit and penchant for sarcasm.  He cherished spending time with family and friends, particularly the annual family vacations in the Outer Banks, N.C.  Don was an avid sports enthusiast, particularly when cheering on his New York Giants!  He played tennis, loved card games, puzzles, and reading.  He was an animal lover and rescued both of his treasured dogs Maggie and Nutmeg.

Don served as a Sergeant in the United States Army working on radar systems before earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from Kent State University and a Master of Science in Statistics from Rutgers University.

He married his first wife Helen Kyrioglou Dimitry in 1960 and settled in Westfield.  Over the next three years he welcomed his two sons John and Tom into the world.   His only daughter Christina completed the family several years later.

Don enjoyed a 31-year career at IBM which included a four-year European assignment that brought the family to Switzerland and Belgium.  Upon returning from their overseas travel, the family settled in Summit, N.J. where they remained for 20 years.  After retiring from IBM, Don spent several years working as the Director of IT at Bouras Industries.

In addition to working for IBM, Don co-authored two books, lectured at Rutgers University and served as an Adjunct Professor for the Fairleigh Dickinson MBA program. He was an active member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church serving as treasurer of the parish council for many years.

In 1998 Don married Nancy Wiatt Dimitry and she quickly became an integral part of the family.  They enjoyed 25 wonderful years together in Madison N.J.

Don was predeceased by his first wife, Helen Dimitry and his parents John and Irene Dimitry.  He is survived by his wife Nancy Dimitry, his younger brother James Dimitry, his 3 children John Dimitry (wife Sue), Tom Dimitry (wife Karen), and Christina Dimitry and his grandchildren Devon, Brian, and Kayla, as well as his many grand-dogs.
