Constantine ”Gus” Zades, beloved father, husband, grandfather and great friend passed away on Monday, December 18, 2023. He was 98.
Gus was born October 19, 1925 in Oneonta, NY to Greek immigrants George and Helen (Arbes) Zades. The family then moved to Elizabeth, NJ. He attended Thomas Jefferson HS and graduated in 1943. Gus continued his education at Fordham University School of Pharmacy and graduated in 1948. After college he served in the US Army in Korea from 1950 to 1952 with the 5th Regimental Combat Team. He was stationed on Kogedo Island, a prisoner of war camp for North Korean prisoners. Gus received the Combat Medic Badge, Korean Service Medal, numerous battle stars and the United Nations Service Medal. He was discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant.
Gus married his wife Catherine in 1955 and resided in Roselle. He moved his family to Cranford in 1966 and resided there until he passed. He owned Belmont Pharmacy in Newark and then Ellenport Pharmacy in Elizabeth. Eventually, in 1972, he bought Park Pharmacy in Roselle Park and worked there until he retired in 1992.
Gus was a devoted reader of both the New York Times and Wall Street Journal. Had a great knowledge and loved talking about American history, New York Yankees, the stock market and his Greek heritage. Best of all he loved the talking to his friends, whether they were young or old.
Gus was predeceased by his wife Catherine in 1999. He is survived by his son, Steve and his wife Virginia, daughter Helen and her husband John, grandsons Nick, Mike, Christopher and Conner. Also, his dear friend Marie Mastorakis
Gus leaves behind his extended family and his many dear friends, both of whom truly loved him.
Family and friends are invited for visitation at Higgins and Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home, 582 Springfield Ave,. Westfield www.higginsandbonner.com on Thursday, December 21, 2023 from 4 to 8 PM. The service will be at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 250 Gallows Hill Road, Westfield on Friday, December 22, 2023 at 11AM.
Gus has requested in lieu of flowers to please make a donation to the Salvation Army or St. Hubert's Animal Center in Madison.
