Obituary

Bela Schmidt of Mountainside died on Friday, September 23. Born to Elizabeth and Gyula Schmidt in Budapest, Hungary, he pursued his higher education in London and received a masters degree from Penn State. He was a mechanical and acoustical engineer and specialized in interior and exterior noise abatement.

In 1975 he married Nancy Olsen, a beloved Westeld educator, who died in 2012. Avid sailors, Bela and Nancy enjoyed sailing the East Coast and the Caribbean. They also traveled extensively in Europe, South America and Australia.

Bela was an active member of the Deutscher Club of Clark, the Magyar (Hungarian) Club of New Brunswick and the Active Retirees of Mountainside. He was also a member of numerous US and European professional associations.

After his wife’s death he enjoyed the devoted companionship of Josene “Jo” Evans who survives him. He is also survived by his niece Katalin Schmidt Kantor of New Jersey and his cousin Gaber Zoltay of New York and cousins Katalin Kugler, Orsolya Zoltay, Erika Schmidt all of Hungary and cousin Beata Schmidt of Slovakia.

A wake will be held at Higgins and Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home, 582 Springeld Avenue, Westfield, New Jersey, from 9 to 11 am Tuesday, September 27th, to be immediately followed by service at 12 noon at St. Paul’s Episcopial Church, 414 East Broad Street, Westfield.
