ANNE MARIE MASTROIANNI, 94, passed away on Monday, February 2, 2026, with her loving husband Michael by her side.
Anne Marie was known as “Annie” to her beloved husband Mike, Marie by many and simply “Ree” to her nieces and nephews. She was called a dear friend by all who knew her.
Anne Marie was born in Bayonne, graduated from Holy Family High School in 1949 followed by graduation from Bayonne Hospital School of Nursing. After completion of her nursing degree, Anne Marie worked at Overbrook Psychiatric Hospital where she tended to the medical needs of psychiatric patients; she was known to bring home a few folks for Sunday dinner because they had no one else. She became the Assistant Director of nursing at St. Barnabas Hospital in Livingston followed by years of service at Somerset Hospital in Somerville. She completed her nursing degree from Seton Hall University while working full time as a nurse.
Anne Marie was an avid writer. She showered her friends and family with cards and letters. Congratulations, words of cheer and encouragement and anecdotes to lift spirits were often in the mail. She spent many hours in card stores selecting just the right card for the particular occasion. Her family joked that she should buy stock in Hallmark and that she boosted the sales of postage stamps! She had a quick wit that emitted laughter and good fun. Strangers soon and often became friends. She wrote daily poems during the pandemic and sent them to everyone in her contact list. She did this to lift the spirits of friends and family and to occupy her time. She loved word puzzles, crossword puzzles and got hooked on Wordle in her 90s!!!
Mike and Annie met at a New Year’s Eve party in 1970, married in 1973 and settled in Mountainside where they have lived for over 50 years. After their marriage, Anne Marie joined her husband in a successful business venture – the operation of the 21st Street Car Wash in Bayonne. After many years in Bayonne, Mike and Anne Marie relocated and opened the Towne Car Wash in Westfield, which they operated until their retirement in 2003. They worked side by side every single day and until her passing had never spent a day apart from one another and that is exactly how they wanted it to be.
After their retirement Mike and Ann Marie became members of the Overlook Foundation which develops, manages, and distributes resources to advance the delivery of high-quality health care by Overlook Medical Center. She was a devoted animal lover, sometimes admitting out loud that she thought animals were better than humans, although she had a deep respect for human life and a deep commitment honoring and caring for those who were in less fortunate circumstances. She knew what it was like to live during difficult times and she was keenly aware of and had compassion for all who suffer. Anne Marie was often the instigator for adding to their large dog family, she would often say “what’s one more?” They provided a home and love to eighteen dogs during their life together.
In addition to her husband Michael, Anne Marie is survived by her nieces and nephews - Elizabeth O’Donnell and her children Andrew and Madison Voorhees, Mark O’Donnell and his daughter Gwyneth O’Donnell, Lien and Roy Kuczera, Matthew Ho, Thomas La and many beloved cousins and friends. AnneMarie was predeceased by a sister and brother, Catherine O’Donnell and John Kenny. She also leaves behind her dogs Crystal and Ellie whom she loved so very much.
In lieu of flowers the family requests you consider a donation to the Center for Hope Hospice and Palliative Care in Scotch Plains or any animal rescue group of your choice.
