Alan Simberloff Obituary

Alan Selig Simberloff beloved father. grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend to many, died on February 10, 2026. Alan was born May 3, 1930 to Martin and Ann Simberloff. He grew up in Elizabeth, NJ, surrounded by family and friends. During his younger years he would meet and befriend his life-long best friend Bob Bernstein. They remained close until his death in December 2025. He also met his future wife, and love of his life Rosann Smith who gained his affection in Hamilton Junior High School. She baked him a muffin filled with egg shells and pepper that he ate every bite, so as to not offend her. Whatever she put in it worked, because they fell in love. They dated throughout junior high and high school, spending many date nights at Spirito’s Restaurant. They married in December 1950 and had a long and loving marriage up until her death in October 2000. Together they raised three daughters.

After graduating from high school, he attended both the University of Wisconsin-Madison and NYU, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts Degree and a Masters in Business Administration. He then served in the U.S. Army in 1951 during the Korean War before settling down with his wife in Elizabeth, NJ and later in Hillside, NJ. He eventually took over as the respected owner of Magnolia Beef Company for over fifty years, before retiring in 2018.

During his lifetime he traveled to many places, enjoyed meeting new people, and trying every cuisine possible, to the chagrin of his eldest daughter. His favorite thing to do was to spend time with the people he loved, especially if food was involved. He was known for seeing the best in people, his big heart, his corny jokes (otherwise known as Pop Pop jokes), and the neverending humming that didn’t stop unless he was eating. He was a dedicated father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who never failed to offer support in any way he could.

He is predeceased by his wife Rosann Smith, his sister Harriet Hershenov, his daughter Diana Simberloff, and his granddaughter Diana Souza. He is survived by two daughters, Marian Hunt and Ellen Fitch. His grandchildren Nicole Hayes, Alyssa Hunt, Tilghman Gordon, Sarah Gordon, and Taylor Gordon. And his great-grandchildren Diana Gonzalez, Raymond Kolaranda, Madison Gordon, Logan Gordon, Hudson Gordon, and Darius Whitaker.

A graveside service will be held at Mount Lebanon Cemetery at 189 Gill Lane in Woodbridge Township, NJ on Friday February 13, 2026 at 12:30pm. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations in Alan’s name to a charity of your choosing.
