Robert Burke Obituary

Robert E Burke, 91, of Point Pleasant NJ, passed Friday afternoon, July 19, 2019 with his family by his side. 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday July 25th, at 10:00 AM at Our Lady of Lourdes RC Church in Mountainside NJ.  Prior, the viewing will be held on Wednesday July 24th from 4-8 at Higgins and Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home 582 Springfield Ave., Westfield NJ. www.higginsandbonner.com

Bob was born in Revere, Massachusetts on October 9,1927 to the late John and Margaret (nee Murray) Burke.  He attended Immaculate Conception High in Revere then studied business at Boston University on a Basketball Scholarship.   

His college career was cut short when Bob Entered the US Army during WW2.  He proudly served his country until 1947 when he was honorably discharged. He worked for United Airlines for over 40 years and this is where he met his wife Maureen (nee McElroy), in 1962.  They married in 1967 and together had 4 children.  They moved to Mountainside NJ where they would reside for the next 25 years and raise their family. They moved to Point Pleasant, NJ in 2002. Bob was an active member of St. Martha’s Church.

Bob is predeceased by his wife Maureen and survived by his children Jennifer Shober (Tony) Westfield NJ, Michael Burke (Cindi) Westfield NJ, Stephen Burke (Quinn) of Wall NJ, Brian Burke (Lisa) of Allendale NJ, Maureen Berman of Unicoi, TN and Susan Dixey (Danny) of Acton, ME, Brother in law Owen McElroy (Monita) of Clinton NJ and the late sisters in law Ann McElroy Hynes, Joan McElroy and Bernadette McElroy ; Grandchildren Colin, Ellie and Ysabel Shober; Carly and Brynne Burke; Kira and Brenna Burke; Rebekah Polofsky, Benjamin and Sarah Berman; Amanda and Melissa Dixey; Five great grandchildren; Niece Kelly Hynes and nephews Owen McElroy and Sean Hynes.  

Bob loved being around his family, especially the grand kids, enjoyed “Old” movies, music, his daily walks on the beach/boardwalk, history, talking to people and was an avid sports fan (unfortunately he was a Red Sox fan, but nobody is perfect).
