Nellie Coppa of Kenilworth passed away at home peacefully on March 24, 2018 surrounded by her family. Born and raised in Elizabeth, she graduated from Battin High School. She married Frank, who predeceased her. They had four children; Frank Coppa (Dianne), Joanne Pepe (Eugene), Lorraine Petrovey (Gerald) and Deborah Shields (Elton). Nellie is also survived by ten grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
Throughout her life Nellie was a devoted mother, and in the eyes of her children epitomized maternal love. Although her life revolved around her children, she worked at Simmons during World War II, attended Kean College, taught at St. Michael’s School in Elizabeth and earned her real estate license. She also served as an officer in the local AARP chapter and was a member of the Holy Rosary Society and the Kenilworth Senior Citizens.
Nellie had a vivacious personality, a contagious laugh, loved the shore and family gatherings. She will be deeply missed and will always be loved by her family. She will remain in our hearts forever. Flowers are appreciated as are donations to the Kenilworth Rescue Squad.
Viewing will be on Tuesday, March 27, 2018 from 4 to 8 PM at Higgins and Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home, 582 Springfield Ave., Westfield. www.higginsandbonner.com The funeral will be from the funeral home on Wednesday, March 28, 2018 at 9:00 AM. A Funeral Mass will follow at 10:00 AM St. Theresa's RC Church in Kenilworth. Entombment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Newark.
