Michael Joseph Shelley of Garwood, N.J., passed away peacefully on Monday, July 8, 2017, at the age of 95. Funeral services will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 11, 2019, at the Higgins Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home, 528 Springfield Avenue, Westfield, N.J. followed by a 10:00 a.m. Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at St. Anne’s R.C. Church in Garwood, N.J. Interment will follow at St. Gertrude's Cemetery, Colonia, N.J. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation to celebrate Michael's life on Wednesday, July 10, 2019 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Michael was born and raised in County Kilkenny, Ireland . He moved from Ireland to the United States in 1949 and arrived in Newark, N.J., where he met his beloved wife, Ann. They settled in Elizabeth, NJ and raised their three children. Michael was an Operating Engineer with the Elizabeth Board of Education for over 25 years, before retiring. He was proud to be an American and honorably served in the Army National Guard. He took great pride in his Irish heritage where he served in the Irish National Guard and also with the allied cause during WWII. He enjoyed Irish music, reading and sharing humorous stories from throughout his life with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren. Michael was a warm and kind person with a good heart that will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all who knew him. He leaves behind his three children, Jim of Flanders, N.J., and his wife, Diane, Ellen of Garwood, N.J., and Michelle of Syracuse NY, and one sister, Elizabeth of Great Britain. Michael was also blessed with four cherished  grandchildren, Richard  and his wife, Gina, Michael, Joseph and John and his great-granddaughter, Juliette.
