Maurice Chartoff

Maurice Chartoff – loving husband, brother, father, uncle and grandfather – died peacefully on January 14, 2018 in New Haven, Connecticut.  He was 96 years of age.  Maurice was born and raised in Bennington, Vermont, the son of Samuel and Mary Chartoff.  He initially attended the University of Vermont until he enlisted in the Army prior to World War II.  Maurice served in the Pacific theater as a radio operator and was a survivor of the Bataan Death March and three years in a Japanese prison camp.  He returned to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology after the war and earned a degree in electrical engineering.  He moved to New Jersey where he met and married Doris Stone and settled in Union, New Jersey.  He worked as an electrical engineer for 50 years at ITT in Nutley, New Jersey and obtained a Masters degree from the New Jersey Institute of Technology.  He raised two sons, Marvin and Stanley and has four grandchildren, Hannah, Sonya, Harry and Ruth.  After the passing of his loving wife, Doris, Maurice moved to Woodbridge, Connecticut where he enjoyed friends and conversations and played a wicked game of Bingo.  Maurice is predeceased by his wife and his son Marvin, and survived by his son, Stanley, his daughters-in-law Janice and Karen, and his four grandchildren.

A funeral is being held on January 15, 2018 at Higgins & Bonner – Echo Lake Funeral Home, 582 Springfield Ave, Westfield, New Jersey at 1 p.m.
