Senior corporate investment executive and counselor, prominent businessman and Union County resident
Joseph Anthony Bardwil, 90, of Cranford, NJ, formerly of Elizabeth, NJ and Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, died Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at home, surrounded by his family.
Visitation hours will be from 4 to 8 pm, Friday May 3 at Higgins and Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home, 582 Springfield Ave., Westfield, NJ. The Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, May 4 at 10:30 am at St. Michael’s RC Church, 40 Alden Street, Cranford, NJ.
Joseph was born October 29, 1928 in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. He had a distinguished 40-year career as an investment management professional. He began with Dun & Bradstreet as a credit reporter then took a role at Prudential Insurance Company as a general investment manager. He later went to the Hartz Mountain Corporation as an executive VP and chief financial officer before launching his own private financial consultancy.
Joseph was active in both St. Genevieve RC Church, Elizabeth, NJ and St. Michael RC Church, Cranford, NJ in both the Parish Council and Lector Ministries. He was a history buff whose knowledge of both World and U.S. History was unparalleled. A gifted piano player, he was able to play fluently without having received formal lessons. Besides English, he was fluent in Arabic and Spanish, and dabbled in numerous other languages.
A 1946 graduate of Brooklyn Prep, he went on to receive his bachelor’s degree from The Wharton School University of Pennsylvania in 1950 and was a member of the Alpha Sigma Phifraternity. He received his MBA from New York University in 1956 and spent time as an adjunct professor at St. John’s University.
He was the son of the late Najeb and Malvina (Galaini) Bardwiland was predeceased by a son, Joseph Jude and his brother, Albert. He is survived by his wife, Valerie (Pavilonis), brother, Raymond and wife Mary of Libertyville, IL, sister-in-law, Cecelia Bardwil of Merrick, NY and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his children Anita O’Malley and husband Kevin O’Malley, James, David and Joanna, along with seven grandchildren.
