Guillermina (Fuentes) Abdala

Guillermina ‘Guillo’ Abdala - devoted wife, sister, mother, aunt, and grandmother- died peacefully on February 2, 2018 after battling a long illness. She was born on March 14, 1932 in the town of La Maya outside of Santiago de Cuba.  She was the sixth child of seven born to Joaquin and Ramona Fuentes.  At age 25 she immigrated to the United States, and lived in Brooklyn with her brother’s family.

She met her future husband Miguel Abdala the following year, married, and moved to Elizabeth, New Jersey.  Miguel and Guillo have two children, Lizette (Michael Tormey) and Michael ( Madeline Corchado). Guillo loved spending time with her Family, especially her Grandchildren: Michael, Ryan, Katherine and Vanessa.

Guillo loved to cook for both her immediate and extended Family and truly enjoyed hosting all the gatherings at her home. She loved gardening, especially tending to her beautiful roses. Guillo loved to travel and spent her early retirement years traveling through Europe.

She worked for many years as a seamstress at Evelyn Pearson in Elizabeth.  She was proud of her Cuban heritage, and was a member of the Cuban Club and Muchachitas Cubanas for many years.

Guillo was predeceased by her Parents Joaquin and Ramona Fuentes, her siblings Abel Fuentes, Jose Fuentes, Armando Fuentes, Andres Fuentes, Joaquin Fuentes and Maria  Yvonnet.

Visiting will be held Tuesday, February 6, 2018 from 4 to 8pm at Higgins and Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home, 582 Springfield Ave. Westfield, NJ. The Mass of Christian Burial Service will be held Wednesday, February 7, 2018, at St. Helen’s RC Church, 1600 Rahway Ave., Westfield, NJ at 10:00am. Entombment will follow at Rosedale- Rosehill Cemetery, 350 E. Linden Ave., Linden, NJ.

The Abdala Family would like to express great appreciation for all the calls and outpouring of love and support during this most difficult time.  In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer’s Association would be appreciated.
