Edward G. Maliniak, 52, of Brick, NJ, passed away peacefully on Feb. 7, 2017.
Visitation will be held on Friday, Feb. 10 from 3:00pm to 8:00pm, Higgins Bonner Funeral Home, 582 Springfield Ave, Westfield, NJ. A Funeral Mass will be offered on Saturday, Feb. 11, at 10:00am at St. Genevieve’s Church, 200 Monmouth Rd, Elizabeth, NJ. The interment will follow at St. Gertrude’s Cemetery, Colonia, NJ.
Ed was born in Elizabeth, NJ and graduated from Elizabeth High School in 1982. He was a 29-year member of the Elizabeth Fire Department, spending the majority of his career in Ladder Co. 3. His last assignment was the Bureau of Fire Prevention as a Fire Inspector. Ed received multiple Valor Awards, one in particular for his bravery in saving a young girl in a fire. He received the Outstanding Public Service Award from Imani Temple Baptist Church, Elizabeth, NJ, in recognition of his dedication and outstanding contributions of exemplary public service to the City of Elizabeth. He received a commendation from the FMBA for his time and effort in support of Hurricane Katrina Relief and also received the Thomas Okpych Memorial Award. Ed served as the Secretary of the FMBA Local 9 for many years. He also volunteered coaching in various youth sports leagues in Brick, NJ.
Ed is survived by his loving wife of 24 years, Michelle (Byrnes); his beloved children, Kyle and Kaitlyn; his brother, John, and wife, Jan, of Clifton, NJ; his brother, Richard, and wife, Gina, of Parrish, FL; brother-in-law Patrick Realmuto, of Elizabeth, NJ; along with 7 nephews and 11 nieces, 2 grandnephews and 2 grandnieces, and 7 sisters-in-law and 7 brothers-in-law in the Byrnes family. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Marian Maliniak, and his sister, Carol Realmuto.
