Alfred Flood Obituary

Alfred Patrick Flood, 94 of Colonia, NJ and Sunrise, Westfield, NJ; the loving husband of the late Lorraine (Oehlmann) Flood passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 19, 2018.

The son of Patrick Flood and Ann (Healy) Flood, Al was born in 1923 in Elizabeth, NJ where he was raised as one of 5 siblings with brothers Jake, Eddie, Tommy and their sister Ann all predeceased.  He was a graduate of St. Patrick’s High School where he reveled in basketball/baseball and carried friendships from the school for life. Fond of those memories Al was always willing to volunteer stories of what was Elizabeth in the Great Depression era.

Al joined the US Navy spending two tours in the Pacific theater of WWII as a gunner on a torpedo bomber. After discharging he returned to work in Port Newark until his application to the NYPD came up. He spent 23 years with the NYPD most all as a detective assigned to various organized crime investigations by the Brooklyn D.A.’s office. Never one to sit still during those years on days off Al painted houses, drove cabs, sold real estate as a licensed agent and refereed youth football. After retiring from the NYPD Al found his way into banking for another 28 years. First directing security for First Jersey National Bank, Jersey City, then Trust Company of New Jersey, Jersey City. When Trust Company was sold in 2004 Al finally retired at 80.

1955 Al married Lorraine, they started a family and raised their children Sharon and Greg in the Westerleigh section of Staten Island and then the Colonia section of Woodbridge Township. They were active in Zion Lutheran Church, Clark where Al volunteered in varying capacities including a term as President. A cancer survivor Al was an active volunteer for 30 years at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital. Al’s passion since childhood was the YMCA and he would routinely ask anyone if they’re working out. When not at the Y Al and Lorraine enjoyed travelling the globe  and endlessly entertaining friends and family at their home.

Al is survived by his daughter Sharon Battaglia, her husband Bill of Elizabeth, their two sons Brian of Elizabeth, Nicholas and his wife Faye of Union; his son Greg, his wife Andrea of Westfield/Sea Girt and their three sons Andy, Greg and Mike all of New York City.
