It is with deep sadness, the family of Frederick John Chang, a 46-year resident of West Caldwell, NJ, announce his passing on April 19, 2018. Freddie or Fred, as he was known to his family and friends, was the eldest son of John and May Chang of Fresh Meadows, NY. Born on April 22, 1943, Fred attended Stuyvesant High School and went on to receive his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from The Cooper Union and a graduate degree from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute. Having co-published a paper on microwaves and laser-generated coherent light in the 1960’s, Fred went on to an impressive career working for Singer Kearfott, BAE Systems, and Alcatel Lucent, finally retiring in 2004.
Fred was predeceased by the love of his life, Lillian in 2007; they were married for 41 years. Fred is survived by their three children and their spouses, Sandra (Jonathan Karabas), Michael (Michelle Leung), and Gregory (Alison D’Alleva), and nine grandchildren (Samuel, Sarah, Benjamin, Faith, Hannah, Hope, Lily, Annabella and Samantha), a brother, Glenn, his companion of 4 years, Linda Joe, as well as many nieces and nephews.
A brilliant and kind man, Fred will be remembered for his love of Costco products, expertise with cars especially his 2 Teslas, electronics, Bradley Beach, fixing anything broken, and for quoting Consumer Reports statistics.
