Elizabeth “Betty” Sweeney, 92
Loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother
Elizabeth Catherine Sweeney of Roselle Park passed away surrounded by family on November 1, 2017 at Overlook Medical Center.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 5, at Higgins and Bonner Funeral Home, Westfield from 3-7. The funeral mass will be offered on Monday, November 6, at Church of the Assumption, Roselle Park at 11 A.M. Interment will be at St. Gertrude’s Cemetery in Colonia, NJ.
Born in Elizabeth, NJ, in 1925, Betty was the daughter of the late Frank and Elizabeth Schaffer. She was predeceased by her brothers, John and Michael.
She married Vincent Sweeney, and they lived in Roselle Park in the home that he built. Together, they shared 58 years of marriage that were filled with an abundance of joy and many blessings until his passing in 2007.
She was the cherished mother of Vincent and his wife Mary Lucille, Susan Tracy and her husband John, Thomas and his wife Rose Marie, James, John and his fiancée Colleen, and Patrick.
She is survived by her 12 grandchildren, whom she was so proud of, and her 15 great grandchildren, whom she adored more than anything.
She had a love of flowers, enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, and spent many Sundays on her deck listening to Frank Sinatra. Everyone felt welcome in her home to enjoy a cup of tea. She treasured being surrounded by her family for holidays and loved chocolate. Her commitment to her community ranged from active membership at Church of the Assumption to her participation at the Senior Center. She served on the Advisory Board for the School District and even volunteered at Robert Gordon School. She was a beautiful woman, both inside and out, and she will be remembered for her strength and her devotion to her family.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer’s New Jersey, a cause that became dear to her.
We will miss you Mom, Mommom, Grammy, LaLa, GG Fireplace.
