Edward J. Sisk

Edward “Eddie” Joseph Sisk, 60, passed away Wednesday, June 26 surrounded by his loving family. Eddie was born in Elizabeth and was a lifelong resident. He took pride in his family, his parish of St. Genevieve’s, and his work with the Elizabeth Fire Department, from which he retired as Fire Chief in 2010. He was the son of the late Elizabeth Fire Chief, Edward J. Sisk and late Norma Sisk.

Eddie is survived by his beloved wife, Helena, and their three devoted children, Edward Joseph Sisk, Nicholas Dominick Sisk, and his wife Amy Sisk, and Erin Marie Sisk, and her fiancé Craig Andersson. Eddie was the proud brother to Raymond Sisk and his wife Brigid, Kathleen Addessa and her husband Paul, Maureen Gabriel, and Kevin Sisk. Ed was also the proud uncle to twenty-two nieces and nephews, Jude, his wife Stacey and their son Ryan, Sean Faella, and the late Ryan Patrick Faella, Bridget, her fiancé Jared, Katie, and Billy Buteau, DJ, Nicky, and Dillon Glynn, Sean, Caroline, and Kevin Duffy, Matt, Jack, Connor, and Lily Keane, Ryan and Erika Gabriel, Kelly Addessa, Raymond Sisk, and Kyle and Kayla Sisk.  He was a cherished brother-in-law and treasured Godfather.

Eddie was a man of many passions and dedicated his life to his family, his community service, and the Elizabeth Fire Department. Eddie joined the Elizabeth Fire Department in 1980 and quickly climbed the ranks, making Fire Captain in 1989.  He was appointed Fire Director in 1993, becoming Battalion Fire Chief in 1995, Deputy Chief in 2002, and Chief of the Department in 2003 – from which he retired in 2010. In 2007, Chief Sisk took immense pride in swearing in his two sons, Eddie and Nick, as fourth generation Firefighters in the City of Elizabeth, continuing a family honor and tradition. He was instrumental in coordinating the Elizabeth Fire Department’s mutual aid response to New York City following the 9/11 attack.  Ed is a past president of Elizabeth IAFF Fire Officers Local 2040.  Ed continued in his dedication to civil service as a Contractor and Subject Matter Expert for the NJ Civil Service Commission.

In addition to his memorable career with the EFD, Eddie led a life dedicated to volunteerism in the community. Eddie was a board member at Roselle Catholic High School (Class of 1975), an active volunteer in the RC community, running fundraisers, and coaching girls’ softball from 2003-2015. Ed was also a dedicated parishioner to St. Genevieve’s in Elizabeth and active member of the Knights of Columbus and Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick. Eddie, additionally, was an active volunteer with youth sport programs with Saint Adalbert's, Saint John the Apostle, North Elizabeth Little League, and Elmora Youth League. Ed was also a standout softball player for many years.  Eddie found great joy in combining his Irish heritage with his desire to give back. He is a past president of The Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick of Union County, a major organizer for the Roselle Catholic Saint Patrick’s Day Dance, and was named the Union County Saint Patrick’s Day Parade’s Distinguished Serviceman of the Year.

Family and friends are invited to visit on Sunday, July 30 from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Higgins and Bonner Funeral Home, 582 Springfield Ave, Westfield. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, July 31st at St. Genevieve’s Roman Catholic Church, 200 Monmouth Road, Elizabeth, followed by interment at Saint Gertrude’s Roman Catholic Cemetery, 53 Inman Ave, Colonia, NJ.
