A devoted husband of 38 years to his "golden angel," Arlene, a loving provider to his three sons and a God-fearing Christian man dedicated to serving others through the practice of medicine, Dr. Lloyd Arthur McPherson, M.D. passed away on Tuesday, November 28. He was 72 years old. Lloyd is survived by his wife, the former Arlene Raczkowski, three children - Christopher (Erin), Kyle (Lisa) and Trevor (Stephanie), six grandchildren - Julian, Carter, Jude, Mason, Ezra and Logan, two brothers - Michael Sr. and Reynold Jr., two sisters - Roberta and Wenonah, and many other loving family members and friends.

There will be a viewing on Sunday, December 3 from 4-8 p.m. at Higgins and Bonner Funeral Home in Westfield. A funeral mass will be conducted on Monday, December 4 at 11:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Mountainside.

Born July 11, 1945 in Bridgeton, New Jersey, Lloyd McPherson was the oldest child of parents Reynold Sr. and Jane, who are both deceased. He learned his tireless work ethic from his father, a Jamaican immigrant, and empathy for others from his mother. A talented baseball and football player in his youth, Lloyd prioritized the value of a quality education and enrolled at Howard University after graduating from Bridgeton High School in 1964 to pursue his dream of becoming a doctor.

Lloyd left Howard University in 1970 with his Bachelor of Science degree. He earned his Master of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine degrees from Rutgers Medical School in 1974 and 1976, respectively. He completed his Medical Internship at Muhlenberg Hospital in 1977 and his residency in Family Practice Medicine at St. Mary’s Hospital in 1981.

Thriving under the pressure of life and death situations, Lloyd worked in some of the busiest emergency rooms in the New York/New Jersey region including holding the title of Emergency Room Director at Bayley Seton Hospital in Staten Island, New York before it closed. In the last two decades, he traveled across the country working in hospitals located on Native American reservations, most recently at Quentin N. Burdick Memorial Hospital in Belcourt, North Dakota.

Lloyd was bestowed with numerous honors in his professional career including the esteemed Charles R. Drew Award. He was cited by the Congressional Record and local legislators for his role in saving a 3-year-old Staten Island girl from drowning despite being submerged in icy water for a half hour. He cared for hundreds of thousands of patients over the course of five decades.

Lloyd was an active member of the National Medical Association, the Knights of Columbus and the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Rutgers University Medical School Alumni Association.
