Alan Wheatley died peacefully on June 3rd at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 8, 2017 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM at Higgins and Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home, 582 Springfield Avenue, Westfield, NJ 07090. A funeral will be held on Friday, June 9, 2017 at 10:30 am at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
He was born on June 15, 1936 and grew up in Seaford, Delaware, attended Wesley College in Dover, Delaware where he met Barbara Hanson, served in the U.S. Airforce and upon discharge married Barbara and resided in Cranford for the past 53 years.
Dear to him through the years were his mother and father; Helen and Floyd (Buck) Wheatley, sisters Peggy Coulbourn and Nancy Adams, his wife Barbara and their children Gregg and Allison and their families; Suzanne, Sean, Erin and Katy Wheatley and Daniel Towse and his daughter, Caroline, boyhood friends in Seaford, Delaware and all those he enjoyed during his lifetime.
Golf was a joy to him both at the beginning and end of his working days, hand mowing the greens at the Seaford Golf and Country Club and upon retirement, 12 years as a starter at the Hyatt Hills Golf Course.
He worked for a variety of companies in his lifetime: Hankins Container, Schaefer Brewing Company and PNC Bank.
Alan was a man of enduring truth and decency with the ability to lighten our lives with his humor. These strengths, his kindness and integrity will be missed.
